Audi ORCi Worlds tops 2012

With over
six months to go before the start of racing,
organizers from the Merenkävijät Sailing Club
and the Finnish Offshore Sailors Association
have already attracted 42 entries from six
countries to the Audi ORCi World Championship,
held over 4-11 August 2012. Based on the
historic fortress island of Särkkä in Helsinki
harbor.

issue |
With the
recent distribution of the 2012 ORC Manager
software to all Rating Officers in 35 countries
around the world, boat owners and managers can
now request 2012 ORC International and ORC Club
rating certificates from their national rating
authorities. While some countries will continue
using 2011 certificates.

Ragamuffin wins overall crown
at Sydney-Hobart |
Eighty-four year-old Syd
Fischer, a legend in ocean racing history, has
earned overall victory in ORCi scoring in the
2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in a field
of 38 ORCi teams. This is Fischer’s 46th
offshore season with his latest Ragamuffin, a
Farr-designed TP52 originally from San Diego.

Racing Congress (ORC) announces its 2012 rules
are now available for download online at
the Rules and
Regulations page. These rules include
the International Measurement System (IMS), the
ORC Rating Rules (ORC International and ORC
Club), the “Green Book” of ORC Championship
Rules.

Rolex Sydney-Hobart update |
Syd
Fischer’s Ragamuffin has taken and holds a slim
corrected time lead in ORCi standings in the
Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, in a tight race
among two other rivals with only 90 miles left
to the finish. As of midnight local time, the
Farr-designed TP52 less than two miles from
Jason Van der Slot’s Calm, another Farr TP52.

Fast Fifties takes early lead
in Rolex Sydney-Hobart |
At just over
a day and a half into the race and just passing
the half-way point of the race in the Bass
Strait, Chris Bull’s Cookson 50 Jazz is leading
the 38-boat ORCi Division in the Rolex
Sydney-Hobart Race. Even with a tough first
night in strong southerly breezes and large head
seas, their average speed of 9.1 knots for the
race.

Obituary - Luigi Carpaneda |
Luigi
Carpaneda, a keen offshore sailor known to many
in Italy and beyond, died last week in an auto
accident in his home of Milan. He had a very
busy life that included several aspects, and in
all he's been respected and is now missed and
remembered. Luigi as a teen-ager was one of the
few survivors of the Russian retreat.

ORC Mediterraneans 2012 -
Change of dates |
Organizers
at the Sailing Club of Rijeka (SCOR) and ORC
have announced a change of dates for the 2012
ORCi Mediterranean Championship to 10-16 June
2012. The date change has been made to allow
entries to also participate at the next major
ORC event in the Mediterranean region, the 2012
ORCi Europeans.

ORC adopted in Spain as main
rating system in 2013 |
The Royal
Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV) has announced
that the rating system to be used in local,
regional and national-level offshore sailing
shall be ORC starting on 1 January 2013. During
2012 the current systems will be used for events
on the National offshore calendar.

2011 ORC AGM - Minutes now
available |
Minutes of the 2011 Annual General
Meeting of ORC are now available. This include
minutes of the Congress meeting as well as all
committees. ORC Staff is now working on the
changes for the Rules in 2012 which will be
available by the end of the year to be applied
from 1st January 2012.

Committee chairmen reporting substantial
progress made over the past year in several
areas, and the Management Committee and Officers

yesterday, with meetings of the Offshore Classes

Committees held at the Ritz Carleton Hotel in

their agenda.

Saturday 29th at the Yacht Club Argentino. This
is one of the most important championships of
the region and it has a very high competition

Rolex Middle Sea Race - Malta
rules |
Putting an
end to the drought of Maltese winners, the J/122
Artie, co-skippered by Lee Satariano and
Christian Ripard, was named the overall winner
of the 2011 Rolex Middle Sea Race yesterday.
Artie completed the 606-nautical mile course in
an elapsed time of 4 days, 4 hours, 22 minutes,
54 seconds.

Rolex Middle Sea Race - First
boat home |
Early
this morning, at 0054 CEST, the maxi Esimit
Europa 2, crossed the finish line of the 2011
Rolex Middle Sea Race in Marsamxett Harbour,
Valetta, Malta, to take the line honours win.
The Slovenian maxi completed the course in an
elapsed time of 61 hours, 24 minutes and 35
seconds.

Rolex Middle Sea Race - Make or
Break |
Heading
towards sunset on Sunday evening and a handful
of boats in the 2011 Rolex Middle Sea Race fleet
have found themselves facing the ultimate
drawbridge, the Strait of Messina. With the
current having turned adverse, any boats still
south of the Strait will need enough wind to get
them through.

Countdown to the start of the
Rolex Middle Sea Race |
This 32nd
edition of the 606-nautical mile Rolex Middle
Sea Race begins this Saturday, 22 October from
Grand Harbour. Currently, there are 80 boats
entered from 18 countries. Included in this
number are the former overall winner, Andres
Soriano on the 21-metre mini-maxi Alegre (GBR),
2010 line honours winner.

Galapagos Cup has finsihed |
With the
last race from Isabela Island to San Cristobal
the 9th International Galapagos Cup has finished
with great success. With winds between 15 and 20
knots, the 85 mile-long race to San Cristobal
started at sunset at Isabela island, and was
followed by heavy conditions that night which
challenged all crews.

Galapagos Cup |
Second race
of the Galapagos Cup IX is completed. After a
delay of more than 2 hours, the race dragged its
feet with winds of approximately 10 knots as the
fleet passed through the south passage of Turtle
Island to Puerto Villamil. The Peruvian Kuan Kun
as usual was the first to reach the finish.

Ninth International Galapagos
Cup |
In the first third of the race to Santa Cruz
Island, to the entrance of the Humboldt Current
some 60 miles from Salinas, the wind strength
grew to be in the range of 19 to 22 knots from
the SW quadrant, resulting in a fast race to the
island. From the second day onwards the wind
conditions were stabilized at slightly less
pressure.

Ninth International Galapagos
Cup |
Today the
largest ORC event on the West Coast of South America
started, at the Ninth International Galapagos Cup
2011. This event had its first edition in 1987 and
is contested every 3 years. This regatta is
organized with conducted with great fanfare by the
Navy of Ecuador, the Ecuadorian Federation of
Yachting, Salinas Yacht Club.

Wolfpack Racing Team new ORCi
Norwegian Champions |
It was very
close racing during this past weekend’s Norwegian
ORCi Championship outside Tønsberg in the Oslofjord.
Thomas Nilsson, of the Royal Norwegian YC (KNS), and
his X-41 OD Wolfpack Racing Team came out on top
with only a 1,25 points margin on Jan Henrik Bryde’s
IMX 40 Xanthippe.

Wolfpack leads Norwegian ORCi
Masters |
It was a
wonderful, but cold day out on the fjord south-east
of Tønsberg, with wind about 5 to 6 m/s from the
east. After the first race Wolfpack was at the No. 1
position, followed by Gertrud, Xanthippe, SailLogic
and Team Granseil. (2,3,4,5). In the second race
things were more interesting.

2011, and the two top contenders in each class are

German ORC Inshore Championship |
From the 7th to the
11th of September the Flensburger Segel-Club (FSC)
was host of this years IDMS (ORCi German
Championship Inshore). It was for the fifth time
that the FSC organized this high ranking
championship for the top crews of German offshore

Russian ORC National
Championship |
From September
3rd till 11th the sea around Vladivostok was
boiling, heated by 60 boats participating in the
2011 Peter the Great Bay Cup. Typhoon Talas, which
caused a lot of damage to Japan, breezed past
Vladivostok and made the sailors stay ashore for 48
hours, waiting for the 45 knots wind and 5-meter
waves to calm down.

Final results |
After this final
day of racing, seven of eight scheduled races were
completed to determine the final winners of the XXVI
Trofeo Príncipe de Asturias - Grand Prix
Novacaixagalicia and the new 2011 Spanish ORC
National champions. In ORC Division 0 a winner
emerged who was not at the head of the pack.

This second
day of day of racing at the Prince of Asturias
Trophy - Grand Prix Novacaixagalicia dawned cloudy
with some rain, which gradually diminished with the
advance of the day. The wind which started at 210 at
16 knots in the first race, and then shifted to 215
at 12 knots in the second race.

Aegean Regatta 2011 - Leg 3 and
inshore races |
The race
committee hoisted the AP on Thursday at 10.00, the
prescribed starting time of the race from Nissiros
to Rodos Island, the last stop of the Aegean Regatta
2011. Soon after, as the wind wouldn’t surpass 3
knots, the 78-boat fleet followed the RC boat
offshore heading to Rodos, in pursuit of the wind.

Aegean Regatta 2011 - Leg 2 |
The race
committee set up a downwind starting line outside
the Lakki Cove, Leros, for the second race of the
Aegean Regatta 2011, a 40NM offshore southern course
to Nissiros Island, rounding Kos Island to port. The
10-12 knot Meltemi wind provided excellent sailing
conditions for all boats.

The first race
of the Aegean Regatta 2011, from Samos to Leros
Island, is now complete, the last boat finishing
late at night. The race committee signaled the start
for the first of three classes competing in the
event (ORCi, ORC Club, IRC) at 10:00 exactly, and it
took 5:39 for the DK 46 Jinetera to cross first the
finish line.

Light wind
forced PRO Dina Sfakianaki to use the lay day, a
decision that proved wise as the race committee
managed to complete three triangle races on
Wednesday in 8-10 kts of fairly stable wind.
Meliti IV earned two first places,

40.7 Three Sisters in the same races.

leads ORCi Europeans |
After three
races sailed in moderate to fresh conditions in big
waves, Peter Schmidt’s Evento 42 Silva Hispaniola
and Ludvig Daae’s Bavaria 42M Ille Moro have taken
the early leads in the 2011 ORCi European
Championship. With perfect 1-1-1 scores, this gives
Silva a substantial 7.75 point lead over current
