After
this final day of
racing, seven of eight
scheduled races were
completed to determine
the final winners of the
XXVI Trofeo Príncipe de
Asturias - Grand Prix
Novacaixagalicia and the
new 2011 Spanish ORC
National champions.
In
ORC Division 0 a winner
emerged who was not at
the head of the pack
after each of the
previous two days of
competition. Willy
Alonso’s J/V 42
Castrosua from Monte
Real YC of Bayona, who
even scored sixth in the
final race, was left on
top of the podium with
23 points after the
early series leader
Mirfak had to settle for
second place.
The Synergia 42 from the
Naval Committee of
Racing Ferrol, skippered
by Diego Lopez, was
penalized Saturday night
in a protest made by
Xplosion, so had to end
the series on 29 points.
Tied with Mirfak but
earning third place was
the First 50 from Rui
Ramada YC Fifty, who as
the top-ranked
Portuguese entry in the
fleet also won the Luso
Ramada Prize Don Juan de
Borbon.
But
unlike in ORC Division
0, there were no
surprises in ORC
Division 1, and the
series leader remained
on top to claim claim
victory. Paul and Albert
Moro’s X-37 Solventis,
with Malal Bermúdez de
Castro on the helm,
ended the event with
only 11 points, 23 less
than their nearest
rival, Luis de la Peña’s
Royal Club Náutico de
Sanxenxo-based Beneteau
40.7 Alicia.
And while De la Peña
missed winning the ORC
Division 1 National
Champion prize, he was
crowned as the new 40.7
Spainish Champion, who
raced as a group within
the class. Ending in
third place from the
Portuguese Club Torreira
was Delmar Conde’s Porto
de Aveiro, skippered by
Delmar Conde himself.
There
were also no surprises
on the last day in ORC
Division 2, as perennial
champion Pedro Campos of
the Real Club Nautico de
Sanxenxo, on the helm of
his Movistar, finished
first with 10 points.
Second was Javier
Puertas’s Caroline with
18 points, and third was
Fran Edreira’s ESOG from
Nautico de La Coruña
with 29.5 points.
Campos’s title as the
new Spanish ORC Division
2 National Champion
earned here, as well as
victories in A Coruña,
Bahía de Baiona and the
Vigo estuary, has made
him a serious candidate
for the President Trophy
Xunta de Galicia.
